There's something undeniably nostalgic about pulling out the Christmas decor bins and decking your home with holiday motifs. Of course, there are the classic decor pieces we reach for year after year: garlands, wreaths, and twinkling Christmas lights are annual must-haves. But there are also unexpected trends that can elevate your holiday displays this season—and we're dishing on all of them.

Earlier this year we flew over to attend Christmasworld, the top trade show for holiday decorations, held in Frankfurt am Main which is home to one of the oldest outdoor Christmas markets in Germany. The annual show sets the tone for what will be trending in Christmas decor for the season ahead. Imagine aisle after aisle of the city’s convention center bursting with holiday cheer: a dazzling frozen forest around one corner, visitors rocking in Santa’s sleigh around another. We watched as retailers from around the globe placed their orders for this holiday season, setting the tone for what we can expect in the holiday decor space.

To help you deck the halls in style, we're sharing the top Christmas decor trends we spotted, along with how you can incorporate them into your home.

1. Honeycomb Motifs

Foldable paper decorations were everywhere at Christmasworld, from the smallest of ornaments in a full spectrum of colors to 10-foot-tall trees in snowy white cardboard. Known as honeycomb or accordion-style, collapsible decor has been rising in popularity thanks to their space-saving ability to store flat. Try mixing and matching different colors to coordinate with your existing palette. You’ll find a range of options at big box retailers this season—check out West Elm's tabletop trees for a gorgeous tablescape, or shop the selection at The Paper Lantern Store for foldable light-up lanterns in snowflake shapes that can be used outside.

2. Confectionary Classics

It’s not just stockings that will be overflowing with candy this season. Confectionary classics like lollipops, ice cream cones, peppermint candy, and gingerbread houses were all over Christmasworld, putting a sugary spin on traditional decor. Look for Candyland-inspired ornaments to decorate the tree, or pile glass candies into a bowl or jar for an extra sweet touch at the dessert station. You can also make your own candy tabletop trees by sticking gumdrops onto an frosting-covered styrofoam cone. (Just be sure to wrap the cone in plastic wrap first to make it food safe.) And don’t forget about the Christmas village—this time created from a group of real or faux gingerbread houses with vibrant red and green icing or Barbiecore pink.

3. Flocked Favorites

Wreaths, garlands, and trees (both life-size and the tabletop variety) will look as if they’ve just emerged from that first fresh snowfall this year. That’s because if it’s green and it’s faux, it’s going to be flocked—a soft, fuzzy finish that's created with velvet-like synthetic snow. Not to be confused with all-white faux trees, a frosted tree still has greenery peeking through.

4. Natural Touches

Woodland references bring a naturalistic counterpoint to the lush red-and-green palette that typifies Christmas—the more rustic, the more dramatic the contrast. Look for pieces with knotty wood grain, raw tree bark, and woven twigs in a range of wood species. Birch, for example, has a whitewashed look, while teak is tawnier. Or, make your own by adding pinecones to garlands (try dipping them in wax for a frosted finish) or stringing wooden beads together.

5. Fabric-Wrapped Ornaments

Maximalists, rejoice! Ornaments wrapped in fabric were a Christmasworld favorite. Velvety soft baubles in rich jewel tones lend a luxurious touch to the tree while multicolored silk-thread-covered balls are bringing the circus stripes trend home for the holidays. Continue the theme with plush ribbon embellishing your tree, either wrapped around like garland or as individual cuttings tied in bows on branches.

6. Glamorous Metallics

An elegant alternative to heartier greenery, delicate-looking metallic wreaths and garlands have a longer holiday lifespan thanks to their transitional tone. Put one up in time for Thanksgiving and it will feel festive right through New Year’s Eve. It's also an easy DIY—a little spray paint goes a long way! Simply update your current greenery with metallic accents by spraying add-ons like pinecones and magnolia leaves in shimmering gold or silver.

7. Twinkling Fairy Lights

Holiday decor—both indoor and out—is getting a glow-up this season, thanks to modern LED lights. Look for artificial twig trees, like the kind Balsam Hill carries, plus oversize hanging decorations like stars and snowflakes, all pre-wrapped in hundreds of tiny radiant lights. Some come as plug-in varieties, while others are battery-operated, usually up to 6 hours. And don't forget to get creative—we love how Wendy Lau of The Kwendy Home created an arbor-like setting above her Christmas table using copper piping to prop up a twinkling garland.
