The best flower delivery services of 2024, tested by AOL

Best flower delivery services
We tested all the best flower delivery services to see which was superior. (AOL / Camryn Rabideau)

Whether you’re celebrating a happy occasion like a birthday or sending condolences after loss, the best flower delivery services make it easy to show loved ones you’re thinking of them, even if they live far away. You’re able to shop online, choosing from dozens of beautiful arrangements, and the fresh flowers will be delivered right to your recipient’s doorstep. Many flower delivery services even offer same- or next-day delivery if you’re in a time crunch!

However, it can be hard to know what you’re going to get from a flower delivery service if you’ve never used it before. The internet is full of horror stories of arrangements that look nothing like the photos or deliveries that never showed up at all. To help you decide which flower delivery service is the best option for your special occasions, we tested out eight popular brands, evaluating them on factors like ease of ordering, flower variety, and overall value. We had flowers shipped to two homes in different parts of the country, so we were able to see the flower quality and longevity firsthand.

After weeks of testing, the following are the best flower delivery services that we recommend, as well as some guidance on what to look for when shopping for arrangements online.

We tried: Fall Devotion Bouquet | Price range: $30–$200 | Delivery method: Local florist or boxed | Same-day delivery: Yes | Subscriptions: Yes

After testing eight different flower delivery services, we thought that 1-800 Flowers offered the best all-around experience — and some of the most beautiful flowers! The well-known brand has hundreds of arrangements to choose from, sorted into categories like birthday, holiday, and sympathy, and it has an impressive variety of options for same-day delivery, which are hand-delivered by the company’s network of local florists.

The 1-800 Flowers website is extremely detailed and easy to navigate. It prompts you to put in the delivery zip code and will only show arrangements available in that location, and each product description tells you exactly what flowers are in the bouquet and how they’re arranged. Most arrangements are available in multiple sizes, and when you select a delivery date, the brand is transparent about any extra fees — for instance, weekend delivery often has a small surcharge. The website also makes it easy to add extras to your delivery, in case you want to include some chocolates, a balloon, or another treat for your recipient.

To test 1-800 Flowers, we ordered the Fall Devotion Bouquet, which was arranged and delivered by local florists, and it was easily one of the most beautiful arrangements of all the options we tested. We had the arrangement delivered to two locations in different parts of the country, and both bouquets were artfully arranged and filled with fresh, vibrant blooms. If anything, the in-personal arrangement looked bigger than the product’s online photos! We changed the water in these arrangements every few days, and the flowers stayed fresh for more than a week.

Overall, we were truly impressed by 1-800 Flowers — the website made it easy to order, the prices were reasonable, and the flowers were some of the best we tested. So no matter what occasion you’re shopping for, we think this brand is definitely a top choice for flower delivery.

Pros
  • Lush, artfully arranged bouquets
  • Long-lasting flowers
  • Wide selection and many same-day options
Cons
  • Arrangements didn’t include care directions

We tried: Classic Black Box | Price range: $42–$800 | Delivery method: Boxed | Same-day delivery: No | Subscriptions: No

Fresh flowers never last as long as you want them to — even with diligent care, they usually start to wilt within a week or so. If you want to send a long-lasting gift that your recipient can enjoy for months (if not years!), we recommend browsing the collections at The Million Roses. This online flower delivery service sells unique preserved roses that are long-lasting and effortless to maintain, and we were amazed that they look and feel just like fresh flowers — the only difference is that they don’t wilt over time.

As its name suggests, this brand specializes in preserved roses, so you won’t find any other flowers among its offerings. It has a variety of different rose arrangements to choose from, including long-stem flowers and pre-arranged boxes in a range of sizes. You can also choose from many flower colors: There are classics like red and pink, as well as more flashy options like metallic gold or rainbow. Just make sure to plan ahead when shopping, as The Million Roses only offers same-day delivery in the Los Angeles area.

We tested the Classic Black Box with red roses from this brand, and it arrived carefully packed so the flowers were in pristine condition. The presentation of the flowers is lovely and elegant, and it’s a sure way to wow your sweetheart on special occasions. After more than three weeks, the roses are still in perfect condition — no watering needed — and we look forward to enjoying them for months to come. The only downside is that the preserved flowers don’t smell as much as fresh roses, which might be a letdown if you love the scent of fresh florals wafting across your home.

Pros
  • Beautiful, full rose arrangements
  • Flowers last for months (or even years)
  • No care required
Cons
  • The preserved flowers don’t smell
  • Higher price point than fresh flowers

We tried: The Golden Sunflower | Price range: $55–$250 | Delivery method: Boxed | Same-day delivery: Select locations only | Subscriptions: Yes

If you want to send a unique, modern bouquet, we highly recommend browsing the selection at Urban Stems. This brand is based in New York City, and while its selection of arrangements is smaller than other sites, we were impressed by its eye-catching designs, many of which feature lesser-used flower combinations or unconventional color palettes. Plus, its flowers were some of the longest-lasting blooms that we tested, despite the fact that they shipped in a box.

Urban Stems ships its arrangements nationwide, and the flowers arrive neatly packaged in a box. You can get same-day delivery in certain cities, including DC, NYC, Jersey City, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, and Dallas, but the flowers are still delivered boxed — something to keep in mind if you prefer pre-arranged blooms. Most arrangements are available in multiple sizes, and when you check out from the website, you have the option to add on a vase, though it does cost extra.

We tested out the brand’s The Golden Sunflower bouquet, which has a cheery monochromatic yellow design, and we were truly impressed by the quality and longevity of the flowers. The sunflowers were carefully wrapped to prevent damage during transport, and they were just beginning to open, which ensured they lasted as long as possible. While we did have to put together the arrangement ourselves, it was easy to do, and the bouquet included all the flowers in the product photo, as well as plenty of greenery for a full, lush design. These flowers lasted for well over a week, even without having their water changed, and we were highly impressed with the quality of the blooms, especially considering that they were shipped in a box.

Pros
  • Beautiful, modern arrangements
  • Long-lasting flowers, even with minimal care
Cons
  • Vases cost extra
  • Same-day delivery only available in certain cities

We tried: Olive Tree | Price range: $35–$200 | Delivery method: Boxed | Same-day delivery: No | Subscriptions: Yes

Not a fan of flowers? You can send live houseplants instead with the help of The Sill. This popular plant delivery service has a wide variety of plants — from low-maintenance options like snake plants to rare variegated monsteras — that they’ll ship all over the country. It makes for a unique birthday or housewarming gift, especially for plant-loving friends who live far away.

The Sill makes it easy to find just the right plant for your needs, sorting them into categories like pet-friendly, easy-care, and low light, and if you’re sending a plant as a gift, you can include a cute message pop, too. The brand provides comprehensive care guides for all its plants, and it also offers a 30-day happiness guarantee and will send a replacement if your plant dies. Just keep in mind that The Sill only offers standard shipping, so you will need to plan ahead if you’re sending a plant as a gift.

When we tried out The Sill for ourselves, we ordered an Olive Tree, which comes with both a nursery pot and decorative planter, and it arrived impeccably packaged and in great condition. It took a little effort to get all the packaging off, but overall, we were impressed at how well the brand is able to ship such a large plant. (It’s around 4 feet tall!) Of the two plants we ordered, one did experience a period of “transplant shock” — because it was moved from a warm greenhouse to a cooler climate, it did drop quite a few of its leaves after arrival. However, after a few weeks, it perked back up and began growing again, so you may need to be patient as the plant adjusts to its new home.

Pros
  • High-quality plants with secure packaging
  • Wide selection, including some rare plants
  • Longer-lasting gift than flowers
Cons
  • Some plants may experience “transplant shock”
  • Prices are more expensive than local nurseries

We tried: Harvest Season Bouquet | Price range: $30–$175 | Delivery method: Local florist | Same-day delivery: Yes | Subscriptions: No

If you specifically want a pre-arranged bouquet that will be hand-delivered to your recipient’s door, you’ll want to check out Teleflora — it’s the only flower delivery service we tried that solely works with local florists! None of its flowers ship in a box, and the brand offers one of the biggest selection of same-day flower options, allowing you to order as late as 2 p.m. on weekdays or noon on the weekends.

Teleflora’s website isn’t the best, as it has a slightly outdated design and fewer photos, but the brand still has a wide selection of arrangements for every occasion. Most bouquets are available in multiple sizes, and many of their designs feature decorative vases that your recipient will be able to save and reuse. Plus, the brand makes it easy to add on extras like balloons, chocolates, or stuffed animals to your delivery.

When we tested Teleflora, we ordered the Harvest Season Bouquet, and it looked just like the photo, complete with the pitcher-style vase and decorative fall foliage. The arrangement was full and absolutely beautiful, and with a little bit of tending, the blooms lasted for more than a week. We also love that this brand has a lower overall price point than others — many of its “premium” bouquets (the largest size option) are priced under $80.

Pros
  • Locally arranged bouquets with many same-day options
  • Well-balanced arrangement with fresh flowers
  • Many products include decorative vase
  • Lower price points than other brands
Cons
  • Not the best website interface

We tried: Cinnamon Spice | Price range: $49–$270 | Delivery method: Local florist or boxed | Same-day delivery: Select locations only | Subscriptions: Yes

Several of the flower delivery services we tested offer recurring bouquet subscriptions, but of all the brands, Bouqs makes it the easiest to gift a flower subscription to your loved one. The brand offers three-month flower subscriptions in several styles, allowing you to choose from classic bouquets, luxurious collections of roses, or more quirky “farmer’s market” arrangements. There are also three bouquet sizes to choose from, and you can select the first delivery date, in case it’s a gift for a birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion.

Bouqs also offers regular flower delivery, as well as plant delivery, and there are dozens of modern arrangements to choose from, including a variety of fun seasonal designs. The brand does offer same-day delivery in certain cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami, but for the most part, its bouquets will arrive boxed. Most arrangements come in three sizes, and you can also choose from multiple vases to complete the delivery.

We ordered the Cinnamon Spice arrangement from Bouqs, and we loved its fun seasonal design, which included all the same flowers shown in its online photos. The larger chrysanthemums came with protective nets to guard their petals, but a few of the smaller roses had broken stems. Overall, the design was lovely and the flowers were good quality, but we did think that the vase wasn’t well-suited to the arrangement. It had a small opening at the top, which made the flowers all stand straight up, making them look very crowded.

Pros
  • Offers flower subscriptions for gifting
  • Seasonal, contemporary bouquets
Cons
  • Vase wasn’t well-suited to the arrangement
  • Arrived with some broken stems

We tried: Belle of the Fall | Price range: $59–$499 | Delivery method: Boxed | Same-day delivery: No | Subscriptions: Yes

Farmgirl is known for its luscious bouquets, which are often shipped in the brand’s signature burlap wraps. They’re based in California, and their contemporary arrangements often feature fan-favorite blooms, including peonies and garden roses, in stylish muted colors. Plus, of all the boxed flower delivery options that we tested, Farmgirl's were the easiest to arrange — the stems all come cut to length and layered nicely in the packaging so you can simply trim them and pop them in a vase. The end result? A professional-quality arrangement with minimal effort.

Farmgirl has a smaller selection of arrangements than other brands, and their overall price point is a bit higher, as well. Still, their bouquets are quite show-stopping, featuring beautiful blooms and lush greenery. The brand doesn’t offer same-day delivery, but you can often get arrangements delivered next-day if you’re willing to pay for expedited shipping. It’s also worth noting that the brand automatically applies “Route Package Protection” to its orders, which protects against damage during transit but adds an extra $5.95 to your purchase. You can remove the protection at checkout, if desired.

When we ordered the Belle of the Fall bouquet from Farmgirl, we had mixed results. When delivered to the West Coast, the flowers were beautiful and fresh, lasting for more than a week with a little bit of care. However, our East Coast delivery wasn’t as nice. Many of the flowers arrived wilted or browning around the edges, and the arrangement also had a large number of substitutions — so much so that it barely looked like the same bouquet. For this reason, we’d recommend this service more highly for locations around California where the flowers don’t have to travel as far.

Pros
  • Minimal trimming needed for arrangement
  • Shipped in cute burlap packaging
Cons
  • More flower substitutions than other brands
  • Added fee for “Route Package Protection”

We tried: Fall Break Bouquet | Price range: $40–$200 | Delivery method: Local florist or boxed | Same-day delivery: Select locations only | Subscriptions: No

Of all the services we tested, FTD had some of the most budget-friendly options. The brand’s website has a whole section of flower arrangements under $60, but the price point was reflective of the quality of the product. We tested the Fall Break Bouquet, and it was the smallest and least impressive arrangement, by far. It arrived in a box and only included 10 stems, and the glass vase was way too large for them, making the bouquet look even more sparse. Plus, the gerbera daisies arrived with brown spots on the petals, which took away from the arrangement’s overall appearance, and the lilies were tightly closed buds, some of which didn’t open as expected.

Overall, we’d recommend skipping this service — Teleflora has some comparably priced arrangements that are much more attractive and will come hand-delivered by a local florist.

Pros
  • Large selection under $60
Cons
  • Very small arrangement
  • Not the best flower quality

To help you find the best flower delivery service to use, we tested a total of eight popular options, including 1-800 Flowers, FTD, Teleflora, Bouqs, and more. Over the course of two months, we ordered from each brand, evaluating them in the following areas:

  • Website design: Before ordering each arrangement, we took time to browse through each brand’s website. We noted whether it was easy to navigate, if flowers were well-categorized, if you could filter availability based on zip code, and if it was easy to contact customer support, if needed.

  • Selection: As we selected flowers to order, we took note of how many arrangements are available, the overall price point, and whether they’re shipped in a box or delivered by local florists. We also gave additional points to brands that offer multiple arrangement sizes and have clear photos and detailed descriptions.

  • Ease of ordering: While ordering flowers from each site, we noted whether there were any unexpected fees, delivery restrictions, or upcharges. We also paid attention to whether you could add a card and whether the flowers came with a vase.

  • Delivery: We ordered two identical bouquets from each flower delivery service — one was delivered to me at my home in Rhode Island, and a second went to another product tester in California. We noted whether the bouquets arrived on time, if we were kept up-to-date on tracking, and whether the arrangement came with instructions and flower food.

  • Flower quality: Once the flowers arrived, we arranged them (if needed) and took note of the flower quality. We considered whether the bouquet looked like the product photos, if there were any wilting flowers or broken stems, and the overall appearance of the bouquet. We also logged how long the flowers stayed fresh and how much maintenance was required.

This testing took place over the course of two months. Once complete, we tallied up the scores for each delivery service and sorted the top performers into categories based on who we think should use them.

When you’re ordering flowers, you have two main options to choose from: buy directly from a local florist or use a flower delivery service. There are benefits to each method, so the choice really comes down to which option is best for your situation.

When you purchase directly from a local florist, the main benefit is that you’re supporting a small business. Additionally, your flowers will be professionally arranged in a vase and delivered by courier straight to your recipient’s door, often with a hand-written card. When working with a florist, you’ll also generally get fresh flowers that have been carefully preserved to maintain their quality.

However, some florists don’t have websites with specific product listings, so you’ll generally need to call and tell them what kind of flowers you’re looking for. If you’re not familiar with flowers, this can be challenging. They may also have a limited selection of flowers, depending on where they’re located and the current season.

On the other hand, flower delivery services are larger companies that allow you to shop — and pay — for your flowers online. They generally have a much wider selection, and you’ll be able to browse through dozens (if not hundreds) of arrangement options, including different bouquet sizes. In this way, many people find that ordering from a flower delivery service is more convenient.

When it comes to delivery, some online services ship the flowers to your recipient in a box, which means they’ll need to be arranged upon arrival. However, other brands like Teleflora act as a middleman and send the order to a florist in your recipient’s neighborhood, who will then fulfill the order.

Best flower delivery services
There are lots of factors to consider when you're shopping for the best flower delivery service. (AOL / Camryn Rabideau)

It can be hard to decide which flower delivery service to use, as many have similar arrangements and price points, so there are a few key factors you’ll want to look at as you decide where to place your order.

Most flower delivery services have dozens of arrangements to choose from, but brands may have different aesthetics. For instance, 1-800 Flowers tends to have more classic designs, while the bouquets at Urban Stems are a bit more unique and modern. The first step when choosing a flower delivery service is to simply browse through their offerings and decide which brand has a style that you like.

While browsing different websites, it’s important to filter down the results based on the delivery location. Most brands have an area where you can input your recipient’s zip code, and the website will only show you arrangements that are available in that location. Don’t forget this key step as you shop — it’s always frustrating when you pick out a beautiful bouquet, only to find out it’s not available to ship to your recipient.

Online flower delivery services generally fulfill orders in one of two ways: by sending the order to a local florist near your recipient, or by shipping the flowers in the mail. There are pros and cons to each method, so you’ll want to consider which option will work best in your current situation:

  • Local florist: Brands like 1-800 Flowers and Teleflora have networks of local florists all around the country that fulfill their orders. These arrangements will be professionally designed using fresh flowers and hand-delivered to your recipient’s door. This saves them from having to arrange the flowers themselves, but there’s always a chance the bouquet won’t be exactly what you ordered — if the florist doesn’t have the right vase or flower varieties, they may substitute in alternatives that can change the look of the final product.

  • Shipping: Other services, such as Urban Stems and Farmgirl, opt to ship their flowers in the mail. With this fulfillment method, the bouquet will typically match the online description more precisely, but there’s always a risk that the flowers are damaged during shipping or don’t arrive on time. Additionally, your recipient will have to arrange the blooms themselves, which includes trimming the flower stems and sometimes providing their own vase.

Most flower delivery services offer their arrangements in several sizes, allowing you to find the price point that works within your budget. However, in addition to the price of the flowers themselves, many brands have additional fees that you’ll want to take into account. For instance, most companies charge a shipping and/or delivery fee, and the amount may increase if you want next-day or weekend delivery.

There’s always a chance that something goes wrong with your flower delivery — it doesn’t arrive on time, the flowers are wilting, the vase is broken, etc. — so it’s always a good idea to select a flower delivery service with good customer service. Before you place your order, you may want to consider the brand’s customer service options. In general, you’ll get a faster response if you’re able to call and speak to a representative than if you just have to fill out a request form and wait for them to get back to you.

Best flower delivery services
Farmgirl ships flowers wrapped in paper, which helps them keep that gorgeous appearance. (AOL / Camryn Rabideau)

After testing eight of the most popular flower delivery services, our top recommendation for ordering flowers online is 1-800 Flowers. This brand has one of the biggest selections of flowers, including arrangements for all occasions, and it offers same- or next-day delivery on many of its products. Plus, because 1-800 Flowers works with a network of local florists, most of its bouquets will be carefully arranged by a professional and hand-delivered to your recipient’s door.

There are a few common problems that you may run into when ordering flowers online. Flowers are delicate, and they can be damaged if shipped in a box or become wilted if there are shipping delays. The good news is that you can avoid these issues by selecting an online flower company that works with local florists, who will deliver the arrangement via courier.

Another downside of online flower delivery is that substitutions are common. Most flowers aren’t in season all year-round, so florists may swap in other types of blooms, which can make the final arrangement look different than expected.

If you want to avoid these issues, you may want to order directly from a local florist, who will be able to tell you exactly what’s in season and put together a custom arrangement to meet your needs.

FTD is the parent company that owns ProFlowers, another online flower delivery service. ProFlowers has a more contemporary selection of bouquets, including lots of bright colors and mixed blooms, while FTD’s selection tends to skew a bit more classic.

In our testing, the flowers from 1-800 Flowers were much more impressive than those from FTD. The arrangement from 1-800 Flowers was arranged and delivered by a local florist, and it was an oversized, stunning bouquet that featured a wide variety of freshly cut blooms. By comparison, the bouquet from FTD arrived in a box and only contained 10 total stems. Some of the flowers were already spotted, and others didn’t open as expected. So while 1-800 Flowers is a bit more expensive, it’s definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

Yes, FTD has a network of florists around the country that it uses to fulfill its same-day orders. However, not all of its floral arrangements will be made by local florists—the one we ordered, the Fall Break Bouquet, shipped in a box and needed to be manually arranged. If you want the flowers to arrive fully arranged and ready to display, be sure to read the description carefully.

FTD and Teleflora are different companies, and there are a few key distinctions between the two. All arrangements from Teleflora are designed and delivered by local florists — the brand has a network of more than 10,000 florists nationwide that it works with to fulfill orders. This makes it one of the best flower delivery services if you want same- or next-day delivery. FTD, on the other hand, only offers same-day delivery in selection locations, and many of its arrangements ship in a box. Between the two, we recommend Teleflora, as we weren’t particularly impressed with the arrangements we received from FTD.
