Jenna Bush Hager reveals what happened on wild ‘last week of freedom’ after dad’s election
Jenna Bush Hager is recalling a spontaneous trip she took during her “last week of freedom” before her dad, 43rd President of the United States George W. Bush, was sworn in.
During a chat on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna Dec. 5, Jenna and Hoda Kotb discussed her early days as a freshman in college when she was still just a presidential nominee’s daughter, rather than a member of the first family.
Jenna had enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin a few months before Election Day in November 2000, and her two roommates were chosen via random lottery, she said.
"I think they did not know what to make of me," Jenna said.
"I wasn’t the president’s daughter yet, but I was right on the precipice," she added.
Amid the uncertainty at the time, Jenna said her roommates had an idea.
“On Election Day, they were like, ‘Girl, we got to get some Mind Erasers,' which was a shot back in the early aughts... ‘because who knows what’s going to happen tonight,’” she said while using her best Texas twang.
Then, after her dad was named the president-elect, they decided to celebrate Jenna's "last weekend of freedom" before she was assigned Secret Service detail.
“‘They were like, ‘We’re driving to Mexico!’” Jenna shared.
A stunned Hoda asked, “You drove across the border?”
"I drove across the border to Acuña, Mexico," she replied. "It was legal to drink there, so it felt safer.”
As for what she can she recall about the bar and that night?
“There was a bar with a slide. That’s all I remember. Thank God I’m alive. Thank you, God!” she said as the two co-hosts doubled over laughing.
