Orange Kitty Insists on Taking 'Lovey' To Bed Every Night and It's Too Sweet

Baby kittens are not all that different from human babies—they need love and attention from their caretakers, lots of food to feed their quickly growing bodies, and of course, the soft comfort of a cozy “lovey” for when their family isn’t near. For this kitten, who is probably used to having his littermates around to snuggle with, a little cozy stuffed animal is vital for making him feel safe and warm at bedtime.

Arlo the orange kitten hasn’t even been living in his forever home for two months and he’s already right at home, playing fetch with his new mom, enjoying snuggles on the couch and playing with a multitude of cat toys (and some things, like light switches and hanging plants, which are not meant to be toys at all). But his favorite toy by far is a little blue lovely which combines the head of a stuffed animal and a tiny, wash-cloth sized blanket. Arlo carries it everywhere, especially at bedtime, where he always grabs it before he hops up on the bed to cuddle it while he sleeps.

Cats and Cat Toys

We got our cats many cat toys when they first came to live with us, but that’s before we learned the rule about cat toys is that if you spend money on them, the cat will inevitably decide that they have no interest in it. At least, as long as you are paying attention. After all, it was over two years after I first purchased a fleece bed for my cat, then abandoned it in a back corner of my living room that I found her curled up inside of it, making biscuits.

Cats. The one thing you can count on is them being contrary.

Raise your hand if you’re a cat parent who has bought your cat a felted ball cave they’ve ignored, or an electronic toy for which they preferred the box it came in? The only two toys that my cats truly loved from the moment I unboxed them were a tiny wire and cardboard “teaser” and their giant cat tree.

Getting Your Cat a Lovey

If your cat shows interest in having a lovey, however, it pays to get them something that is the correct size. Too small an item will read as “prey” to their hunting instincts, and they’ll be more likely to tear it to pieces rather than to love on it. A kitten will be looking for a “litter mate” sized replacement, so get them a lovey that’s about the same size as they are, as Arlo and his companion.

For an older cat, they will likely want something more “kitten” sized that hey can hold in their mouth and carry around. In all cases, a fluffy, floppy lovely is the best choice, as it will retain scents of both humans int he cat’s family and the cat himself. Cats have scent glands in their cheeks and paws and will likely rub themselves against the lovey as well as “make biscuits” by pawing at it to mark the material with their unique scent.

Some cats like loveys with inters testing or crinkly textures and others will just enjoy snuggling with it.
